A New Trick from Paris

Prior to celluloid film there was the thaumatrope, paper images back to back  that spun combine to make a single image. These can appear to be three-dimensional also, depending on the artwork. This set came from Optical Toys in Putney, Vermont, along with some of the interesting history of Sir John Herschel, Dr. William Fitton, Dr. William Hyde Wollaston and Dr. John Ayrton Paris, who all simultaneously and independently developed similar ideas for these optical toys.
